Overview of Fynbos pricing

Fynbos offers two pricing tiers: a free plan and the Protea subscription. Both tiers give you access to core savings and investment features, with Protea unlocking additional accounts and capabilities.

  • Free plan: Emergency Savings and Tax-Free Savings at no cost

  • Protea plan: R100/month or R1,000/year for the complete Fynbos experience

  • Simple billing: Charged monthly or annually via card

Your subscription status appears in your Settings under Subscription. The page opens with a Protea access card showing Active or Inactive, followed by your plan, your payment method, and everyone covered.

What's included in each plan

Both plans include the core Fynbos experience: a Cash account, Emergency Savings with goal tracking, and a Tax-Free Savings Account for tax-efficient investing.

The Protea plan is designed for users who want a complete financial portfolio in one place, including multiple savings goals, family accounts, and flexible investment options.

Free plan

The free plan gives you everything you need to start building your financial foundation at no cost.

  • Emergency Savings: Build your safety net with instant access and daily interest

  • Tax-Free Savings Account: Invest tax-free in any one fund you choose

  • Automation rules: Automatically distribute deposits between your accounts

  • Full app access: All core features, transaction history, and statements

The free plan is ideal if you're focused on building an emergency fund and starting your tax-free investing journey. You can upgrade to Protea anytime.

What "Limited" means on the free plan

If you're on the free plan, accounts that require Protea show a Limited label. You can still view these accounts and their balances, but you cannot transfer money into them until you subscribe.

Accounts that may show as limited include Savings pots, Investment accounts, Retirement Annuity, and Kids accounts. Your money and balances remain safe — subscribing to Protea removes the restriction immediately.

Your Tax-Free Savings Account is a special case. On the free plan it stays fully usable as long as your strategy holds a single fund. If you build a strategy across more than one fund, the account shows as limited with the message "Multiple funds selected" until you either subscribe or go back to one fund.

Protea plan

Protea unlocks the full Fynbos experience, giving you more account types and features to manage your complete financial picture.

  • Everything in the free plan: Emergency Savings, TFSA, automation, and more

  • Savings pots: Create multiple savings goals with individual targets and progress tracking

  • Kids accounts: Open and manage accounts for your children

  • Family sharing: Bring your partner onto your subscription and share children's accounts with them

  • Investment accounts: Build custom investment portfolios with your chosen fund allocation

  • Retirement Annuity: Tax-deductible retirement savings with beneficiary nominations

  • Multi-fund strategies: Spread any account across more than one fund

Protea is designed for users who want to save for multiple goals, invest for their family, and take control of their investment strategy.

Choosing your billing interval

When subscribing to Protea, you can choose between monthly or annual billing.

Interval

Price

Effective monthly cost

Monthly

R100/month

R100

Annually

R1,000/year

~R83

The annual plan saves you approximately 17% compared to paying monthly. You can select your preferred interval on the subscription page.

Changing your billing interval

Once your subscription is active, you can switch between monthly and annual billing from the Subscription page.

  1. Navigate to Settings, then Subscription

  2. Tap your plan card, which shows a Change pill

  3. Wait a moment while Fynbos fetches a priced quote

  4. Review what you'll be charged, then tap Change plan

The quote is fetched fresh each time you open the sheet, because the amounts depend on how much of your current period is left.

Switching to annual

Switching to annual bills you immediately, and refunds the unused part of the month you've already paid for. The sheet shows both amounts as Charged today and Refunded to your card, along with your renewal date.

Because the annual term is paid up front, you must tick a confirmation acknowledging that you can't switch back to monthly until the annual plan renews. The Change plan button stays disabled until you do.

Important: Switching to annual is charged straight away and can't be unwound before your renewal date. Make sure the renewal date shown in the sheet works for you before confirming.

Switching to monthly

Switching to monthly takes effect at the end of your current annual period. Nothing is charged at the time you request it, and the sheet tells you the date the change happens and what you'll pay from then on.

While a change is pending

Once a change is submitted, the plan card's Change pill greys out and a card below it explains which change is in progress and when it applies. You can't stack a second change on top of a pending one.

Age discounts

Fynbos applies age-based discounts automatically, per person, based on each member's date of birth. You never need to claim them.

Discount

Who it applies to

Effect

Under 18

Members under 18

That member is free

Under 30

Members under 30

That member pays half price

Each discount runs until the member's birthday takes them past the age threshold, at which point standard pricing applies to that member. The discount is shown next to the member's name on the Subscription page, so you can see exactly who it applies to.

How billing works

Your Protea subscription is billed via card payment on a recurring cycle based on your chosen interval.

Billing cycle:

  • Monthly: Charged on the same day each month

  • Annual: Charged once per year

  • Payment method: Debit or credit card

Your payment card is stored securely and used only for subscription billing. You can update your card details anytime from the Subscription settings page.

Viewing your invoices

Fynbos generates an invoice for each subscription payment. Access your billing history from the Settings page.

  1. Tap Settings from the menu

  2. Tap Invoices

  3. Select any invoice to download as a PDF

Each invoice shows the billing period, amount charged, and payment status. Invoices display a coloured status badge:

  • Paid: Payment was successful

  • Unpaid: Payment is outstanding

  • Uncollectable: Payment could not be collected after multiple attempts

  • Refunded: Payment was refunded

Members on your subscription

Your subscription covers you, your partner if you have one, and any children on your account. The Members section of the Subscription page lists everyone included, with "(you)" marking your own row.

Each member is priced at the plan rate, then their own age discount is applied. So a family of a 34-year-old, a 28-year-old partner, and two children under 18 on the monthly plan is charged R100 for the first adult, R50 for the partner, and nothing for the children.

Adding a partner or a child changes what you pay from the next billing period. Removing them has the same effect in reverse. Setting up your family is covered in Family sharing.

Upgrading to Protea

You can upgrade from the free plan to Protea at any time. The upgrade takes effect immediately.

  1. Tap Settings from the menu

  2. Tap Subscription

  3. Tap Subscribe to Protea

  4. Choose your billing interval (monthly or annually)

  5. Enter your card details and confirm payment

Once subscribed, you'll immediately have access to Savings pots, Kids accounts, Investment accounts, Retirement Annuity, and custom strategies. Any accounts previously marked as Limited will become fully accessible.

Trials

If you're on a trial, you'll see a Trial indicator on your subscription page along with the date your trial ends.

During a trial, you have full access to Protea features. Before the trial ends, add a payment card to continue your subscription. If no card is added, your subscription will expire and Protea-only accounts will become limited.

Cancelling your subscription

You can cancel your Protea subscription at any time. Your access continues until the end of your current billing period.

  1. Navigate to Settings

  2. Tap Subscription

  3. Tap Cancel subscription

  4. Review the Who is affected list, then tap Confirm cancellation

The confirmation sheet names the date your Protea access ends and lists every member covered by your subscription, so you can see who loses access with you.

What happens when you cancel:

  • You keep Protea access until the end of your current billing period

  • After that, Protea-only accounts show as Limited

  • Your accounts and balances remain intact

  • You can resubscribe anytime to regain Protea features

Important: Cancelling affects everyone on your subscription, not just you. Your partner and any children you cover are downgraded to the free plan at the same time.

Resuming a cancelled subscription

If you've cancelled but your billing period hasn't ended yet, you can resume your subscription.

  1. Navigate to Settings

  2. Tap Subscription

  3. Tap Resume subscription

Your subscription will continue as before with no interruption.

Employer-sponsored subscriptions

Some employers partner with Fynbos to offer Protea subscriptions to their employees at no cost.

If your employer has partnered with Fynbos, you'll see a Sponsored by [company name] card on the Subscription page. You won't be charged while employed with that company.

If you leave your employer:

  • You can continue your subscription independently

  • Or switch to the free plan

  • Your accounts and balances remain intact either way

Subscriptions sponsored by someone else

If another person includes you on their Protea subscription — a partner who invited you into their family, or a parent — you'll see a Sponsored by [name] card on your Subscription page, explaining that they're covering your Protea subscription at no cost to you.

The plan and payment sections belong to the subscription owner, so there's nothing for you to manage. If the sponsorship ends — because they cancel, or because one of you unlinks the family — you keep your accounts and balances and drop to the free plan until you subscribe yourself.

Accepting a family invite while you're already paying for your own Protea subscription cancels that subscription and refunds the unused portion. See Inviting your partner.
