Overview of Fynbos pricing

Fynbos offers two pricing tiers: a free Roots plan and the Protea subscription. Both tiers give you access to core savings and investment features, with Protea unlocking additional accounts and capabilities.

  • Roots plan: Free access to Emergency Savings and Tax-Free Savings

  • Protea plan: R100 per month for the complete Fynbos experience

  • Simple billing: Charged on the 1st of each month via card

Your subscription status appears in your Settings under Subscription. From there, you can view your current plan, manage your payment method, and access invoices.

The Roots plan gives you everything you need to start building your financial foundation at no cost.

  • Automation rules: Automatically distribute deposits between your accounts

  • Full app access: All core features, transaction history, and statements

Roots is ideal if you're focused on building an emergency fund and starting your tax-free investing journey. You can upgrade to Protea anytime.

Protea plan (R100/month)

Protea unlocks the full Fynbos experience, giving you more account types and features to manage your complete financial picture.

  • Everything in Roots: Emergency Savings, TFSA, automation, and more

  • Savings pots: Create multiple savings goals with individual targets and progress tracking

  • Kids accounts: Open and manage accounts for your children

  • Investment accounts: Build custom investment portfolios with your chosen fund allocation

  • Retirement Annuity: Tax-deductible retirement savings with beneficiary nominations

  • Custom strategies: Define your own investment strategy across available funds

How billing works

Your Protea subscription is billed monthly via card payment. Understanding the billing cycle helps you manage your subscription effectively.

Billing cycle:

  • Monthly charge: R100 on the 1st of each month

  • Pro-rated first month: When you subscribe mid-month, you only pay for the remaining days

  • Payment method: Debit or credit card

Example: If you subscribe on the 15th of January, you'll pay approximately R50 for the remainder of January, then R100 on the 1st of February.

Your payment card is stored securely and used only for subscription billing. You can update your card details anytime from the Settings page.

Viewing your invoices

Fynbos generates an invoice for each subscription payment. Access your billing history from the Settings page.

  1. Tap Settings from the menu

  2. Tap Invoices

  3. Select any invoice to download as a PDF

Each invoice shows the billing period, amount charged, and payment status. Paid invoices display a green Paid badge, while outstanding payments show as Unpaid.

Upgrading to Protea

You can upgrade from the free Roots plan to Protea at any time. The upgrade takes effect immediately.

  1. Tap Settings from the menu

  2. Tap Subscription

  3. Tap Subscribe

  4. Enter your card details and confirm payment

Once subscribed, you'll immediately have access to Savings pots, Kids accounts, Investment accounts, Retirement Annuity, and custom strategies.

Cancelling your subscription

You can cancel your Protea subscription at any time. Your access continues until the end of your current billing period.

  1. Navigate to Settings

  2. Tap Subscription

  3. Tap Cancel subscription

  4. Confirm your cancellation

What happens when you cancel:

  • You keep Protea access until the end of the current month

  • After that, you'll have access to Roots features only

  • Your accounts and balances remain intact

  • You can resubscribe anytime to regain Protea features

Important: Cancelling your subscription also affects any Kids accounts you've created. Children on your subscription will also be downgraded to the free plan.

Employer-sponsored subscriptions

Some employers partner with Fynbos to offer Protea subscriptions to their employees at no cost.

If your employer has partnered with Fynbos, you'll see a message on the Subscription page indicating your Protea access is sponsored. You won't be charged while employed with that company.

If you leave your employer:

  • You can continue your subscription independently at R100/month

  • Or switch to the free Roots plan

  • Your accounts and balances remain intact either way
