What is an investment strategy?

An investment strategy determines how your money is allocated across different funds when you invest. Instead of manually choosing funds each time you add money, your strategy automatically splits future contributions according to your chosen percentages.

  • Automatic allocation: When you transfer money to an investment account, it's automatically invested based on your strategy

  • Percentage-based: Allocate 100% of your contributions across one or more funds

  • Flexible: Change your strategy anytime to match your evolving goals

Investment strategies apply to Tax-Free Savings accounts and Investment accounts.

Curated vs custom strategies

When setting up your strategy, you can choose between two approaches depending on your account type and subscription.

Curated strategy

Select a single fund pre-selected by Fynbos

Beginners or those who prefer simplicity

Custom strategy

Experienced investors who want more control

For Tax-Free Savings accounts, custom strategies require a Protea subscription.

Setting a curated strategy

A curated strategy invests 100% of your contributions into a single fund. This is the simplest way to get started.

  1. Open your investment account (TFSA or Investment Account)

  2. Tap the menu icon in the strategy card

  3. Select New strategy

  4. Browse the list of available funds

  5. Tap on your preferred fund to select it

  6. Review your selection on the confirmation screen

Your strategy is now active. All future contributions will be invested in your selected fund.

Setting a custom strategy

A custom strategy lets you split your contributions across multiple funds with your own allocation percentages.

  1. Open your investment account from your home screen

  2. Tap the menu icon in the strategy card

  3. Select Edit strategy (or New strategy, then Custom strategy)

  4. Browse the available funds using filter chips:

    • Sharia: Show Sharia-compliant funds only

  5. Tap the checkbox next to each fund you want to include

  6. Tap View strategy when you've selected your funds

  7. Enter your allocation percentage for each fund

Changing your strategy

You can update your investment strategy at any time. Changing your strategy affects future contributions only; it does not sell or rebalance your existing holdings.

  1. Navigate to your investment account

  2. Tap the menu icon on the strategy card

  3. Select New strategy to start fresh with curated options, or Edit strategy to modify your custom allocation

  4. Follow the steps above to select funds and set allocations

  5. Tap Confirm to apply your new strategy

Important: Changing your strategy only affects future investments. Your existing holdings remain invested in their current funds until you sell them.

How your strategy affects investments

When you transfer money into an investment account, Fynbos automatically creates buy orders based on your strategy.

What this means for you:

  • Transfers to your account trigger buy orders for each fund in your strategy

  • Each fund receives its allocated percentage of the transfer amount

  • Buy orders are processed during the next trade window

  • Your holdings gradually align with your strategy as you contribute over time

For example, if your strategy is 60% in Fund A and 40% in Fund B, a R1,000 transfer will create a R600 buy order for Fund A and a R400 buy order for Fund B.

Viewing your current strategy

Your account displays your current strategy in the Investment strategy card.

  • Single-fund strategies show the fund name

  • Multi-fund strategies show a visual progress bar with your allocation breakdown
