Social Media Disclaimers

Thank you for considering Fynbos for your investments. Because South African financial products are subject to clear regulatory guidelines, we have detailed the specific frameworks for each option below. As a standard feature across all Fynbos products, clients pay a flat subscription fee rather than a percentage of their investments. This means your subscription fee do not increase as your portfolio grows. The funds you invest in, like unit trusts or the money market fund, still carry their own standard fees set by the fund managers, not us. See our full pricing breakdown for details.

Account Type

Fynbos Feature Benefits

Statutory Rules & Limits (SARS / FSCA)

Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA)

• Zero tax on interest, dividends and capital gains inside the account. No tax on withdrawals.

• Invest with well-reputed fund managers.

• R46 000 annual contribution limit.

• R500 000 lifetime limit

• Contributing more than your limit will trigger a 40% penalty tax from SARS.

• Falls into your deceased estate, but is exempt from income and capital gains tax during life and on death (still included for estate duty purposes)

Retirement Annuity (RA)

• Lowers the tax you pay this year

• Grows tax-free until you retire

• Protected from creditors

• Generally falls outside your estate for estate duty

• Deduct up to 27.5% of your income, capped at R430 000 a year

• Follows Regulation 28 (max 75% equity, max 45% offshore, max 25% property, max 10% in any single instrument)

• Two-thirds of every contribution (Retirement Component) is locked until age 55, must be used to buy a compulsory annuity, and future payments are taxed as income

• Remaining third (Savings Component): one withdrawal per tax year, minimum R2 000, taxed at your marginal rate

• Contributions before 1 September 2024 form a separate Vested Component under the old rules

• At retirement, older Vested Component savings may allow up to a third as a cash lump sum, taxed via SARS’s retirement table, with the first R550 000 tax-free

• Protected from creditors under section 37A of the Pension Funds Act

• On death, paid out as decided by fund trustees under section 37C, who weigh both your nominated beneficiaries and your financial dependents, and may override your nomination; generally falls outside your estate for estate duty

Emergency Savings & Savings Pots

Money Market Unit Trust

• Held in the Allan Gray Money Market Fund

• Capital-stable, low risk, though not capital-guaranteed

• No lock-in, no notice period

• Savings Pots let you organise this into named goals (a holiday, school fees, a deposit); not the same as the "savings component" of an RA under the two-pot system, a different concept despite the similar name

• Interest taxed at your marginal rate, after the standard annual exemption (R23 800 under 65, R34 500 65+)

• Rate is variable and moves with the market, so isn’t guaranteed; see the current rate on our Emergency Savings page

• Falls into your deceased estate: estate duty and executor’s fees may apply (though effectively no CGT, since money market value stays stable)

Investment Account

• Choose from 100+ local and offshore unit trusts and ETFs

• No regulatory restrictions on the mix, you set it

• The most flexible and customisable Fynbos product

• Interest taxed at your marginal rate (after the R23 800 / R34 500 exemption)
• Local dividends taxed at 20% at source

• 40% of your capital gain is added to your taxable income and taxed at your marginal rate, with a R50 000 annual exclusion

• 1–3 business days to disinvest, no lock-in or contribution limit

• Falls into your deceased estate: a deemed disposal on death triggers CGT (R300 000 exclusion in the year of death), plus estate duty and executor’s fees

Kids Accounts

&

Family Sharing

• No extra subscription fee until your child turns 18, just your own flat monthly fee

• Can hold a TFSA, Investment Account, Emergency Savings or Savings Pots on your child’s behalf

• This account is subject to the same legislative rules and benefits stated above.

• A TFSA held for your child counts towards their own R46 000 annual and R500 000 lifetime limit, tracked separately from yours

Contribution limits, caps and tax rules shown above are correct as at the date this page was last updated. SARS and National Treasury can change these figures, so check sars.gov.za for the latest.

Statutory Disclosures

Please read these before you deposit or invest anything.

  • FSP Licensing & Representation: Fynbos Technologies (Pty) Ltd trading as Fynbos Money is a juristic representative of Life Current (Pty) Ltd, an authorised Financial Services Provider (FSP Number: 51852).

  • The safety of your money: Your underlying investment funds are held, managed, and administered by licensed financial services providers and registered directly in your name.

  • Nature of Service & Advice: What we post on social media and share here is general information, not advice tailored to you. This content is for information purposes only and does not constitute financial advice. Your subscription doesn’t include personal advice, that’s a separate service. If you want a formal recommendation and a Record of Advice, you’ll need to engage directly with a Fynbos adviser.

  • Tax Variables: Any financial simulations or examples shown concerning deductions for any of our products are illustrative only. Your actual tax returns or statements will vary. The tax impact will depend on your circumstances, including your tax bracket, and your final individual tax assessment issued by the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

  • Performance Warning: Past performance of underlying asset managers (including Allan Gray, Coronation, Satrix, 10X Investments, Sygnia, etc.) does not guarantee future financial returns. The valuation of underlying investment funds can go up or down due to market volatility.

  • Fee Structure Nuance: Fynbos operates on a flat monthly subscription model (R100/month or R50/month for users under 30). While Fynbos strips away asset-based platform or advisor fees that come out of your investments, standard statutory asset-management fees within the underlying third-party investment funds may still apply.

  • Paid Partnerships, Ambassadors & Influencers
Some of the content you see from Fynbos on social media comes from people we’ve partnered with, such as ambassadors, influencers, or affiliates who are compensated or otherwise incentivised to talk about us. Where this is the case, the content will be clearly marked as paid, sponsored, or a partnership. These posts reflect that person’s own experience and opinion; they are not financial advice and do not represent a personal recommendation from Fynbos or a guarantee of how any product will perform for you.
