# Tracking external savings

## What is external savings tracking?

External savings tracking lets you include emergency funds held elsewhere, such as bank accounts or other savings platforms, in your overall Emergency Savings progress.

- **Complete picture**: See your total emergency fund across all accounts
- **Accurate progress**: Your target progress reflects all your savings, not just Fynbos
- **Smarter automation**: Automation rules account for external savings when filling to your target

Use this feature if you have emergency savings outside Fynbos that you want to track alongside your Fynbos balance.

## Adding external savings

You can add your external savings amount during Emergency Savings setup or at any time afterwards.

### During setup

When setting up your Emergency Savings target, you will be asked if you have savings elsewhere.

1. Complete the target setup flow until you reach the *Saved elsewhere* screen
2. Enter the total amount you have saved in other accounts in the **Amount saved elsewhere** field
3. Tap **Continue**

Your external savings are now included in your target progress.

### After setup

To add or update your external savings amount:

1. Open your **Emergency Savings** account from the home screen
2. Tap the menu icon (three dots) on the *Target* card
3. Select **Edit saved elsewhere**
4. Enter your updated amount in the **Amount saved elsewhere** field
5. Tap **Continue**

Your target progress updates immediately to reflect the new amount.

## How external savings affect your target

Your Emergency Savings target progress combines both your Fynbos balance and your external savings. On your Emergency Savings account, you will see:

- **Fynbos** (green): The amount saved in your Fynbos Emergency Savings account
- **Saved elsewhere** (orange): The external amount you entered

The progress bar shows both amounts together, giving you an accurate view of how close you are to your target.

**What this means for automation rules**: If you have a target-based automation rule for Emergency Savings, the rule considers your external savings when calculating how much to transfer. For example, if your target is R50,000 and you have R20,000 saved elsewhere, the rule will only fill your Fynbos account until your combined total reaches R50,000.

## Updating your external savings

Your external savings amount does not update automatically. As your savings in other accounts change, you should update the amount in Fynbos to keep your progress accurate.

1. Open your **Emergency Savings** account
2. Tap the menu icon on the *Target* card
3. Select **Edit saved elsewhere**
4. Enter your current external savings balance
5. Tap **Continue**

> **Tip**: Set a reminder to update your external savings amount monthly, or whenever you make significant deposits or withdrawals from your other accounts.

## Frequesntly asked questions

### Does Fynbos automatically sync with my other accounts?

No, external savings are entered manually. You need to update the amount yourself when your balances in other accounts change.

### Can I track savings from multiple external accounts?

Yes, enter the combined total of all your external emergency savings in the Amount saved elsewhere field.

### Do my external savings earn interest in Fynbos?

No, external savings are only tracked for target progress. Only the money in your Fynbos Emergency Savings account earns interest.

### What happens if I remove my external savings amount?

Your target progress will only show your Fynbos balance. Automation rules will adjust to fill your Fynbos account to the full target amount.

### Should I include all my savings or just emergency funds?

Only include money you consider part of your emergency fund. Savings for other goals, like holidays or large purchases, should not be included.
