# Managing passkeys ## What are passkeys? Passkeys are a modern replacement for passwords that use your device's built-in security to verify your identity. - **More secure**: Passkeys are resistant to phishing and cannot be stolen like passwords - **Faster sign-in**: Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or your device PIN - **Cross-device**: Sync passkeys across devices using your browser or password manager Use passkeys to sign in to Fynbos without waiting for OTP codes via WhatsApp or SMS. ## Checking if your device supports passkeys Not all devices support passkeys. Modern browsers and operating systems include built-in support. **Supported platforms**: | Platform | Requirements | | --- | --- | | **iPhone/iPad** | iOS 16+ with Safari, Chrome, or other compatible browsers | | **Android** | Android 9+ with Chrome, Edge, or compatible browsers | | **Mac** | macOS Ventura+ with Safari, Chrome, or compatible browsers | | **Windows** | Windows 10+ with Edge, Chrome, or compatible browsers | If your device doesn't support passkeys, you'll see a message saying "This device doesn't support passkeys" when viewing the *Passkeys* settings page. ## Viewing your registered passkeys You can see all passkeys linked to your Fynbos account from the *Settings* page. 1. Tap your profile icon or navigate to *Settings* 2. Tap **Passkeys** Each passkey displays: - **Name**: A friendly name identifying the device or authenticator (e.g., "Device" or "Security Key") - **Last used**: The date you last used this passkey to sign in - **Created**: The date you registered this passkey If you haven't registered any passkeys yet, you'll see a message explaining the benefits of passkeys and a button to register one. ## Adding a new passkey You can register multiple passkeys to sign in from different devices. Each device where you want to use passkey sign-in needs its own registered passkey. 1. Navigate to *Settings* and tap **Passkeys** 2. Tap **Register passkey** 3. Follow your device's prompts to create the passkey Your device may ask you to: - Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device PIN - Choose where to save the passkey (device, iCloud Keychain, password manager, or security key) Once registered, the new passkey appears in your list and can be used immediately to sign in. > **Tip**: You can register a passkey using your browser's built-in mechanisms, a password manager like 1Password or Bitwarden, or a hardware security key like a YubiKey. ## Setting up passkeys on multiple devices To use passkeys on multiple devices, you have two options: **Option 1: Register a passkey on each device** 1. Sign in to Fynbos on the new device using your mobile number and OTP 2. Navigate to *Settings* > **Passkeys** 3. Tap **Register passkey** and follow the prompts 4. Repeat for each device where you want passkey sign-in **Option 2: Use a synced password manager** If you use a password manager that syncs across devices (like 1Password, Bitwarden, or iCloud Keychain), you can: 1. Register a passkey once and save it to your password manager 2. Access the same passkey on any device where your password manager is installed Synced passkeys provide the most seamless experience across your devices. ## Removing a passkey If you no longer use a device or want to revoke access, you can delete individual passkeys. 1. Navigate to *Settings* and tap **Passkeys** 2. Find the passkey you want to remove 3. Tap **Delete passkey** 4. In the confirmation dialog, tap **Delete** to confirm > **Important**: Deleting a passkey is permanent. You'll no longer be able to sign in using that passkey. If it was your only passkey, you can still sign in using your mobile number and OTP. ## Signing in with a passkey Once you've registered a passkey, you can use it to sign in without entering your mobile number. 1. Open the Fynbos app or website 2. Tap **Sign in with a passkey** 3. Follow your device's prompts to authenticate If you have multiple passkeys registered, your device or password manager will let you choose which one to use. > **Note**: The passkey sign-in option only appears if your device supports passkeys. If you don't see this option, use your mobile number instead. ## Troubleshooting passkey issues **"This device doesn't support passkeys"** Your browser or operating system doesn't support passkeys. Try updating your browser to the latest version, or use a different device that meets the requirements listed above. **"A passkey for this device already exists"** You've already registered a passkey on this device. You don't need to register another one. If you're having trouble signing in with your existing passkey, try deleting it and registering a new one. **"Passkey registration was cancelled"** You dismissed the passkey prompt before completing registration. Tap **Register passkey** again and complete the process. **"Failed to register passkey"** Something went wrong during registration. Try again, and if the problem persists, check that your device meets the requirements and your browser is up to date. **Can't see the passkey sign-in button** The passkey sign-in button only appears if your device and browser support passkeys. Update your browser or try a different device.
